Quality Assurance in Cables: Key Tests for Manufacturers & Customers

To ensure safety, performance, and longevity, both cable materials (compounds) and finished cables must pass rigorous testing. Here’s a quick overview of the essential tests.
1. Tests for Cable Materials (Compounds)
Before production, the raw materials are tested.
Melt Flow Index (MFI): Measures how easily the plastic melts and flows. Important for processing.
Tensile Strength & Elongation: Checks how much the material can stretch and pull before breaking.
Thermal Aging: Heats the material to test if its properties degrade over time.
Oxygen Index: Measures how easily the material burns. A higher number means better flame resistance.
Dielectric Constant: Tests the material’s ability to store electrical energy (important for insulation).
2. Tests for Finished Cables
After production, the final cable is tested.
Conductor Resistance: Checks if the metal wire inside is efficient at carrying electricity. Lower resistance is better.
Voltage Test (Hi-Pot): Applies a very high voltage to ensure the insulation does not break down.
Insulation Resistance: Measures how well the insulation prevents current leakage.
Physical Tests:
Crush Test: Simulates heavy weight on the cable.
Bend Test: Repeatedly bends the cable to check for cracks.
Tensile Test: Pulls the cable to check its strength.
Flame Test: Sets the cable on fire to see if it self-extinguishes. Common standards are IEC 60332-1 (single flame) and IEC 60332-3 (large bunched cables).
Smoke Density & Halogen Content: For safety in enclosed spaces, tests how much smoke and toxic gas a cable produces when burning.
Why This Matters:
These tests are not optional. They are required by international standards (like IEC, UL, GB) to prevent fires, ensure network reliability, and protect people and equipment.
Rigorous testing at both the material and finished product stages is the foundation of cable quality and safety.
