Indonesia’s alumina sector is booming. In late 2024, the SGAR metallurgical grade alumina project by China Aluminum International began production. It’s a joint INALUM and ANTAM effort, with a two-phase plan and 1 million tons per line annual capacity. In 2025, MindID nears completion of the Mempawah refinery, eyeing 1 million tons output in Q1 and also plans a new Kuala Tanjung smelter for 600,000 tons annually.
SGAR, owned by PT BAI (a subsidiary of Inalum and ANTM, both in MIND ID), launched in September with Jokowi at the helm. These alumina strides will boost aluminum hydroxide production, stabilize costs, and drive demand, benefiting Indonesia’s economy and its global aluminum standing. Industry eyes are peeled.
