Decomposition Temperatures and Addition Guidelines for ATH and MDH Flame Retardants

1. Aluminum Hydroxide (ATH): ATH typically decomposes between approximately 200°C(392℉) and 300°C (572°F). Its powder form usually begins to decompose and release moisture at high temperatures (above approximately 200°C/392°F). During decomposition, releasing moisture helps absorb heat and prevent the spread of flames. The residue of the aluminum hydroxide then forms a protective oxide layer, known as aluminum oxide, which further helps stop the spread of flames.

2. Magnesium Hydroxide (MDH): Similar to aluminum hydroxide, magnesium hydroxide typically begins to decompose at temperatures above 300°C. The decomposition process of MDH also involves the release of water and other volatile substances, producing magnesium oxide in the process. These decomposition products help stop the spread of flames and provide fire protection.

Question: Since the decomposition temperature and stability of MDH are higher than ATH, why not use MDH?

Although magnesium hydroxide (MDH) generally has a higher decomposition temperature and stability than aluminum hydroxide (ATH), there are multiple factors to consider when selecting a flame retardant, not just decomposition temperature and stability.

  • Cost: Aluminum hydroxide is more cost-effective than magnesium hydroxide. In mass production, cost is an important consideration
  • Physical properties: Different polymer systems have different requirements for the physical properties of flame retardants. While MDH is better in terms of stability, ATH offers better physical properties such as enhanced strength and stiffness.
  • Processing properties: Flame retardants can affect the processing properties of polymers, such as flow and moldability. ATH has less impact on the processing properties of polymers under some special processing conditions, so it is more suitable than MDH.

In summary, the choice between aluminum hydroxide or magnesium hydroxide depends on the comprehensive consideration of many factors. In practical applications, the two are sometimes mixed in specific proportions to meet special needs.
